Common questions

What is NHANES?+
NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) is a large, nationally representative US health dataset combining interviews, physical exams, and lab data, widely used to study disease prevalence and comorbidity patterns.
What is a comorbidity, and why estimate its prevalence?+
A comorbidity is the presence of one or more additional conditions alongside a primary condition of interest. Estimating prevalence tells you how common these co-occurring conditions are in a population, which is foundational for many types of clinical and public health research.
Do I need prior experience with NHANES or R?+
No. The workshop is beginner-friendly and starts from importing and understanding the dataset structure.
What will I be able to do after this workshop?+
You'll be able to import NHANES data, merge variables across modules, append data across survey years/cycles, and estimate comorbidity prevalence correctly using survey weights.
Why does survey weighting matter for NHANES analysis?+
NHANES uses a complex, multistage sampling design. Prevalence estimates calculated without survey weights are biased and not generalizable to the US population.
Is this the same as the MASLD workshop?+
No. This one is a more general NHANES workshop on identifying and estimating comorbidity prevalence broadly, rather than modelling predictors for one specific condition, and does not include a publication-support track.
What do I need, and what will I receive?+
R (4.3+) and RStudio on your own laptop. You'll get R scripts, slide decks, session recordings, and an e-certificate of completion.
